Description
What are the Types of Sod?
Sod is the grass and minimal layer of soil beneath it that are bound by the roots and thin material. There are different options of sod available for those wanting to renovate their yard. Whether it’s to fit a specific look or take advantage of the type of grass, choosing the type of sod needed is one of the final steps of your renovation efforts. At Whittier Fertilizer, the different types of quality sod we provide include:
- Tifgreen Sod. Tifgreen Sod is finely textured sod that adds definition and fullness to your yard. One of the most noticeable benefits of this medium green sod is its incredible durability. This grass is tough enough for both commercial and industrial landscapes. It’s tolerant to heat, foot traffic, and smog. Because of its natural durability, Tifgreen sod is also temperature and drought tolerant.
- Marathon I Sod. Marathon I Sod is one of the most well rounded products available. Because it is both durable and beautiful, Marathon I Sod provides the best of both worlds.
- Marathon II Sod. Marathon II Sod is an advanced development of the dwarf tall fescue. Its prime benefits include incredible durability, which allows it to be cut shorter than its counterparts. It is extremely dense and has a rich, deep color. This sod is also designed to be disease resistant.
- Marathon III Sod. Marathon III Sod is extremely dense and is a darker shade of green. Finely leafed, Marathon III gives the appearance of an all-natural grass carpet. This sod grows at a slower rate, which decreases the time needed to mow the lawn and clean trimmings. The low disposal volume is popular for many clients. While Marathon III Sod can be used anywhere, it is particularly popular for residential and community areas.
- Sahara Sod. Sahara sod is an improved version of the common Bermuda grass. Because Bermuda grass already has high tolerance for foot traffic, Sahara is very durable and greens up quickly when watered.
- St. Augustine. This turf is particularly course and dense. It is perfect for warm-seasons and warm-weather environments.

Tim –
I am considering Marathon I for my backyard, approx 1500 sq ft. I have a fence that runs along the yard that shades approx 4 feet of the yard and the rest is full sun. How would Marathon I do in this situation? Are there things that can be done to make it grow better in shaded areas, possibly modified watering?
Whittier Fertilizer –
Tim, Marathon I would be the best choice for shaded areas, however no grass will do well in full shade. The Marathon I usually requires 50-60% sun to thrive. I would certainly suggest minimum watering in the shaded areas to prevent fungus and disease.

Hi, im looking at putting in sod in my backyard appx 2200 sqft. I would like something that will stay green all year long and low maintenance. Would Marathon I be the choice for me? Is there an ideal time to put in new sod? Because im looking at doing this in the next 3-4 weeks. What is the current cost and is it still free delivery after 1000 sqft.
Thank you

Hi I’d like to sod my front yard 1070sq ft. What’s the price for St. Augustine and is it now available? What do you recommend in order to prepare the soil for sodding? Also, is delivery free for ordering 1000 sq. ft or more?
Carolina –
Hello,
I currently have an issue with gophers and most of my back yard is dirt and dried up grass. I am having my gardener tear up all the dirt and want to put new grass in. I am interested in St. Augustine but know that it can get pricy. I heard that the grass doesnt have to be completely put to cover the whole backyard, that it can but placed in the corners and in the middle and allow the grass to spread and grow. Is this true? And if so, with about how much grass would I need to purchase.
Whittier Fertilizer –
Carolina, St. Augustine grass will spread out over time. A general estimate is to install about 10% of your total square feet. So if you have 1000 feet, buy 100 feet and cut it into squares.
