What Exactly is Topsoil?
Topsoil is a screened, sandy loam soil that covers the uppermost layers of the earth. Soil itself is defined by the fractions of sand and clay while loam refers to the concentration of sand and clay. Whittier Fertilizer ensures that all sandy loam soil is infused with substantial organic matter to ensure healthy nutrients and good drainage for the surrounding landscape.
Since every client has different fertilization needs, we offer custom mixed topsoil at Whittier Fertilizer. This ensures that your landscape gets the nutrients and texture that it needs. A group of Frederick County Master Gardeners are working with the Advocates for Homeless Families (AfHF) on creating vegetable gardens for the families and their children in the AfHF program. We have build 4 raised beds and purchased compost from the County recycling center. We now need 80 cubic feet topsoil to mix with the compost. Can we pick it up or would you be able to deliver it to 216 Abrecht Place, Frederick, MD 21701? What would be the price?
Both organizations are 501 C non-for profit organizations. We hope you will provide us with a discount, since we are raising the money and can use any monetary help with the garden project.
Best regard,

How long does it take for the delivery after I order it? Is the delivery going to be the same day, next day, or I can request a delivery day?
Mike, we delivery Monday thru Saturday in 2 hour windows. In most cases we can deliver the same day. You can pick any day.
I have a few more questions to ask before I purchase.
1. 1 cubic yard = 27 of the 1 cu bag of soil right? Someone told me that some company make a cubic yard only equal to 9 cu ft.
2. How many square ft can 1 cubic yard cover at 6″ depth?
3. Will 8 cu yards of soil damage my driveway since they are like 2,000 LBS each cubic yard.
4. I have really bad clay soil, which soil should I get? Top soil or soil mix, or other soils that you guys recommend?
5. How many cubic yard can a dump truck carry? Will I get charge additional for delivery if the dump truck have to make more than 1 trip?
Mike,
1. A cubic yard is always 27 cubic feet.
2. 1 yard will cover approximately 50 square feet at 6” deep.
3. The soil will not damage your driveway. The weight of the truck would do damage before the soil would. A standard residential driveway should support the weight.
4. If you are planting in the soil, you need some sort of amendment in the soil. The soil mix is good for grass, trees, shrubs. If your planting flowers or vegetables, I would suggest our Planter Box Mix.
5. We can carry 10 yards of Top Soil or 15 yards of Soil Mix. You will be charged for every time the truck comes out.
{All rates vary on the amount purchased and are subject to change periodically}
1. What is the difference between soil mix and top soil?
2. What is the price of each?
3. How much is the delivery cost to 91744?
4. Can you fit 8 cubic yard into an open area that can park 2 compact car in front of my garage?
Mike, top soil is straight, clean soil. Soil Mix is top soil/compost mix. Top soil is $18.00 and soil mix $19.50 per cubic yard. Delivery to La Puente is $80.00 with a 3 yard minimum. 8 yards should fit in a normal residential driveway.
{All rates vary on the amount purchased and are subject to change periodically}
Or do you think 3/8″ mini-bark is a better choice than organic top soil?
I need 5 cubic yards of organic top soil to lay on top of grass plugs. Delivery location is 91030. What product do you recommend and prices?
I have an approximately 6′ x 9′ x 3′ deep hole in clay I want to put some peach trees in.
1) Is top soil what I need?
2) How overfull do i fill, with no compaction – how much settling will there be?
3) Location is Pasadena 91106.
thanks
larry
Larry, your measurements come to exactly 6 cubic yards. While there will be some settling, you also need to account for the root ball of the trees. 6 yards should be enough. You should backfill with Soil Mix @ $19.50 a yard. Delivery to Pasadena is $90.00. Total would be $225.63. {All rates vary on the amount purchased and are subject to change periodically}
I am a Community Garden member in the Rose Hills Community Garden in Rose Hill near Lincoln Heights and El Sereno. Our garden is across the street from the Rose Hills Projects.
I would like to know is it possible that your business could let us have a sample of your planter mix and or topsoil to see how it works with the vegetable plants grown at our site?
Hopefully, we would be glad to purchase your products for our organic gardens if all is positive.
In the spirit of Alohamana, Mahalo, Vinaka, Thank you,
Judith M. Castillo, Community Garden Member of Native American Heritage and Mother Earth Caretaker
